We are very pleased to be able to share a little something extra this season. It’s our 2014 Proprietors’ Press Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the first in what we hope will be a series of annual, interesting small lots. For our small lots we envision the varietal changing from year to year, but the idea is that each small Proprietors’ Press lot will be something creative and fun that we feel is worthy of bottling on its own and deserving of a little special attention.
This first edition was made from four especially appealing barrels of our 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine saw more new oak than our Estate Cab and was aged longer before bottling. This small run is a nice counterpoint to our Estate Cab, a bit lusher with more dark berry fruit, but of course with Stony Hill’s hillside structure and restraint.
The name Proprietors’ Press might ring a bell to some of you. Its history goes way back to when we used to bottle a bit of special “house wine” under that name. It was usually a red blend from the small plot of red grapes we’ve been growing since the 1980s. It generally got consumed by family and friends but visitors to the winery often left with a bottle or two in their case. This project seemed like the perfect way to bring back one of our favorite names and a little bit of Stony Hill history.
