The color is a surprisingly light straw hue due to the perfect green
firmness of the grapes at crush. The caramel aroma wafting up from
your glass will entice you to begin sipping immediately! It has
a very fresh and light feeling in the mouth without the dried fruit
flavors we usually expect with the Semillon de Soleil. The residual
sugar is 9%, a little lower than usual, and the alcohol is 14.8%,
a little higher than usual due to the grapes being riper than usual
at crush at 38% sugar. Two Dog Vineyard in Calistoga, owned by our
friends Ellis and Anne Hunter Hamilton, supplied us with slightly
more than half the grapes. Should you feel compelled to drink this
wine with dessert, head for stone fruits such as apricots, nectarines,
and peaches or vanilla ice cream or anything you would enjoy inundating
with caramel sauce. We guarantee that the 2000 Semillon de Soleil
will have a similar effect!
